SBNP adalah peralatan/system navigasi yang berada di luar kapal yang didesain dan dioperasikan untuk meningkatkan keselamatan dan efisiensi bernavigasi kapal dan/atau lalulintas kapal, SBNP membantu para navigator adanya bahaya/rintangan navigasi misalnya platform, free standing conductor, karang, air dangkal, dsb.
